With unemployment in Oregon approaching 10.5 percent, well ahead of the national average, finding an industry currently hiring workers can be challenging. There is one industry, however, that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong growth through at least 2018. Aviation jobs are hot and may get even hotter. Aviation engineers, sales managers, mechanics and parts procurement personnel, all specialized positions, are in demand. Aviation technicians can earn from $20 to well over $30 per hour. Jobs in engineering and sales can expect even higher rates of pay. Most in demand, aviation engineers work at private and municipal airports throughout the northwest U.S. If you have a Bachelor of Science degree in civil or aeronautical engineering, you could be working on designing airports and military bases. Previous experience, while not mandatory, is clearly a plus. Salary range: Up to $100,000. Sales jobs in the aviation industry are often difficult to find. Whether with a major commercial airplane manufacturer such as Boeing or smaller private aircraft companies, the jobs are highly sought after. Most require experience, a degree and a serious interest in aviation. Engineers often transition from technical careers to sales for the money. In Portland aviation employers need air-frame and power-plant mechanics. These positions generally require extensive experience and the ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics. Working with sub-assemblies the A&P mechanics fit parts to proper tolerances. Pay ranges from $23 to over $30 per hour. A director of materials is responsible for purchasing and storing parts. The director must be cost-efficient when sourcing new parts. This position is also responsible for developing vendor relationships. To qualify you should have a bachelors degree and experience with aviation materials. If you have a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace, mechanical or electrical engineering, you may want to consider a certification systems engineer position. These jobs develop new systems documentation and coordinate it with the FAA Certification Office. Go northwest and watch your career in aviation take off.
