We all know biases in the workplace exist in terms of equal pay. Men still make more money than women. There are more men in top management positions. Would you believe that women also find an inherent bias because of their size?
Well, it is true. According to an article posted on the Luuux website last November titled, "Women Who Weigh Less Make More", thin women actually earn more money. In fact, the real winners are super-thin women who weigh 25 pounds less than the norm. Another article, "Weigh More? Get Paid Less (unless you are a man)", states there is a discrimination against overweight people in the workplace. Overweight people are not hired as often, are paid less and generally charged more for insurance. They are more likely to be fired than people who are thin or of average weight. The author, Dr. Robyn Silverman, studied over 11,000 Germans and 12,500 U.S. residents. The study showed there is definitely salary discrimination for women based on body weight. Women in business are treated in a similar way to those in the fashion industry. Thin women are rewarded. Average or overweight women are penalized. By contrast, very thin men are often paid less than male workers of average weight. The difference in women's pay is significant. Women who weigh 25 pounds less than women of average weight make $15,572 more per year. Conversely, women who are 25 pounds above the average weight earn $13,847 less than those of average size. The study goes on to say men seem to get a financial pat on the back for gaining weight. Being thin certainly seems, if you are a woman, to pay big dividends. Unfortunately, weight has become a determining factor of a woman's potential. Women who cannot or will not achieve an acceptable degree of thinness end up paying a hefty financial price.
