How many times have you experienced a problem with some piece of technology and had to call the manufacturer's tech support phone number? If you are like most of us, you've been there more than once. Was the experience good, or was it the most frustrating and annoying part of your day? These days, we tend to think that calling tech or sales support phone numbers involve talking to someone in India. If Washington state is any example, that is not necessarily true. While not the center of the customer service world, Washington does have a number of call centers that handle customer relations (CRM) issues such as sales, technical support or general customer service. A few years ago, companies took a look at customer relations and how that department functioned. Many decided there should be one customer relations "expert" to handle only one function. Tech support would handle only technical support issues. Sales would handle only sales. Inside these functions, the job descriptions became even more narrowly defined. If you called about your printer, it was possible you would be handed off to several different CRM agents before your problem was resolved. Things are changing in the CRM world, however. The three CRM disciplines are being retrained to encompass a wider variety of skill sets. Whether in Washington or Mumbai, companies have begun to understand that a good salesperson needs to support the brand as well as the customer. Customer service agents are now doing sales work as well as polishing the corporate image. Even technical support people are now selling and servicing as well as fixing. CRM professionals, perhaps tired of being known as necessary drones, are now becoming marketing professionals. Hard to believe, but customer service agents seem to want to help their customers. CRM centers in Washington have led the way in changing the perception of customer service. While you may never see the friendly face, the friendly voice may actually be able to solve your problem.
