Malaysia may not be a very rich country, but almost every family in this Muslim nation has a hired helper, usually domestic helpers from neighbor Indonesia.
But more than a year ago, domestic helpers from Indonesia are not coming to Malaysia, and the ones already settled are working are now contemplating of leaving work and going back to their homeland. This has caused a shortage of hired helpers in Malaysia, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, where most of Malaysia's middle and upper class families reside. The reason for Indonesian maids not coming to Malaysia is because of the former's government decision to stop sending their people to work as maids unless Malaysia grants their demand for a more competitive compensation and fair benefits. The problem stems from reports that Malaysian employers pay their Indonesian maids less than $200 a month, do not give regular rest days or day offs, and hold onto their maid's passports to prevent them from leaving their masters or from looking for another job. So far the Malaysian goverment has yet to respond to the demands of Indonesia. But with many Malaysian women joining the workforce and needing helpers to take care of their homes and their kids, it will not be long before they respond in favor for a more humane employment deal.
