JobsGetting a Job in the California Entertainment Industry
You have a solid education and a burning desire to work in the entertainment industry. As the theme song from The Beverly Hillbillies says, "Californy is the place you ought to be..." So you load up your truck and move to the left coast only to find jobs in the business few and far between. Chances that you might be discovered at Schwab's drugstore in Hollywood, like Lana Turner, is very unlikely. Patience and persistence is the best advice-and supplementing your acting career with a job waiting tables won't hurt either! That's not to say getting a job in Hollywood is an impossibility. While it helps if you "know someone", there are more pedestrian ways to find work. You must have strong convictions, a desire to succeed and the talent to back up your drive. Obviously, this applies to all careers, not just those in Hollywood. In an industry known for chewing people up and spitting them out, you will find that most entertainment industry executives began their career at the bottom and worked their way up. As mentioned, patience and be persistent go a long way when searching for a job in the California entertainment industry. In a land full of egos, yours is best left in check. Eventually your ego will have its place and be useful. In the beginning, however, it may just get in the way. The idea of working for free or cheap probably won't cover your expenses. It is a great way to get into the industry and gain valuable experience. If you are able financially, you can probably find an entry-level position rather quickly. Do not overlook less-than-glamorous jobs. Making copies for a director could be invaluable experience. Never stop listening and learning. Learn as much as possible about everything you can. And finally, forget the classifieds, as most Hollywood jobs are word of mouth.
