JobsMichigan Home to New Silicon Valley?
Michigan, home to the automotive industry's Big Three for years, is witnessing a sort of re-birth as a technology hub. Of the three, General Motors, Chrysler and Ford, Ford appears to have the most promising future. They did not take any federal bail out funds and even considering the weak economy, their products are selling well.
Currently Ford has a number of job openings for engineers with technology backgrounds and is attempting to fill them. These jobs, primarily in technology areas, appeal to engineers from Silicon Valley. Ford has been sourcing the Internet companies for applicants and also interviewing students and recent graduates from Stanford University. It takes some wining and dining to recruit people from the Silicon Valley area and convince them to relocate to Michigan. Even if you don't consider the climate differences, Silicon Valley is still the worldwide home to technology companies. With the number of job postings at Ford, their human resource teams are scrambling to recruit software engineers to the automaker. Ford is looking for engineers with experience in mobile software applications, cloud computing and energy management. The automaker needs these specific backgrounds as car radios are being replaced with Internet radio and gasoline engines are being pushed aside for motors powered by electricity. In the Detroit area last year, technology job postings more than doubled. The explosive growth made this part of Michigan the fastest expanding area of the country. Talent is needed and it appears there is becoming something of a recruiting war as companies vie for experienced employees. Part of the problem involves the lack of graduates from Michigan and area universities to fill all the positions. For example, at Michigan State University 54 students graduated last month with degrees in computer science. Over 70 percent of them had jobs lined up before they received their diplomas.
