JobsHawaii Forecasts Jobs Increase
The recession and housing collapse may not have been as destructive in Hawaii as other states, but the effect on jobs has been just short of devastating. At the height of the recession, visitors to the Islands dried up. Without the influx of tourists and their dollars, jobs were lost throughout the island state.
Things may be looking up, however, as Hawaii's job market is forecast to grow this year for the first time in four years. Despite a noticeable drop in Japanese tourists resulting from the earthquake, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) forecast economic activity will increase and jobs should grow by 1.8 percent. Only three months ago, the department forecast job growth of 1.3 percent. The revised forecast points toward job growth of 10,700 positions this year. This increase is directly attributable to over 7.35 million visitors this year, a 3.8 percent increase. The forecast was revised downward from 4 percent after the disasters in Japan. The DBEDT report predicts that visitor spending overall will be stronger. The strengthening of the Yen will result in Japanese visitors who visit spending considerably more money than in the past. A number of companies in Hawaii began adding to their payrolls last summer after several years of limited hiring. Some companies during the down days of the recession too many positions and are now scrambling to fill open slots. Solid job growth is coming from areas outside of the tourism sector which has not happened in several years. Areas such as information technology, educational services and business services are adding a number of new employees. By the end of the year, Hawaii's non-agricultural employment should top 604,000 positions, up over 10,000 from last year but still well below the 625,000 jobs that existed in 2007. Several mainland companies, such as The Solar Training Institute from California, are hiring. This company trains people to install and service solar panels for residential and business applications. The upswing in tourism and job growth now make Hawaii an attractive place to live and work.
