Are you tired of winter and long for warm weather and tropical island breezes? If you said yes, then Hawaii is clearly the place for you. You, however, are not quite ready for retirement and need an income to support your golf and tennis habits. If this is the case, there are some things you should know about getting a job in the Aloha State.

It is well known that Hawaii is an expensive place to live. A lesser-known fact, however, is that jobs in Hawaii are not all that available. Sure, there are jobs associated with tourism. But good jobs similar to the one you have on the mainland are relatively few and far between. If your company offers to transfer you to Hawaii, you've got it made. If not, read on...

The second largest employment sector in Hawaii is construction and manual labor. If you have the knowledge, experience or skills to work in these two areas, you can probably find work, particularly on Oahu.

Higher income jobs, those that most of you will need just to meet basic living expenses, are a different matter. While tourism is the largest employer, a good job in the industry will require previous experience, in some cases a great deal of experience. With more qualified people than jobs, competition is tough and jobs go to those with a solid background in the industry.

With over a million people, Oahu has many more tourism opportunities than, say, Maui or Kauai. If you move to Hawaii, consider beginning your job search on Oahu. The job you find may be well below your education and experience, but it will get your foot in the door.

If your background is in an area other than tourism, you may have a difficult time landing that dream job, especially if you are looking for professional level position. Even on Oahu, professional jobs opening are a rare commodity.
