If you think the interview process you went through to get your current job was difficult, consider for a moment what high-level executives are faced with when interviewing for a new job. David Elkins went through eight long, in-depth interviews with his future employer. Once he passed through the interview gauntlet, he then went through an executive assessment conducted by a New Jersey-based assessment firm.

During his assessment, a daylong process, Elkins was involved in a business simulation exercise, role playing, a session with an educational psychologist and online personality tests that gauged specific traits such as strategic thinking. Once not considered particularly valuable in evaluating executive talent, the assessment business is now booming.

Development Dimensions International (DDI) is the New Jersey firm that provided Elkins' executive assessment program. The company says their business is growing rapidly, showing a 30 percent increase in 2010 alone. A human resources consultancy, Development Dimensions is a provider of assessments for picking and promoting top managers.

Around 350 companies are now using executive assessments to help evaluate executive level promotion decisions, almost two times the number this time last year. During the assessment process, psychological interviews develop a comprehensive picture of a candidates strengths and weaknesses.

Much more involved than in-house interviews, Development Dimensions evaluations comprise a variety of cognitive, behavioral, simulation and motivational tests. A complete assessment can cost up to $30,000 and last two days. This is the most intensive C-level evaluation available and many employers rely on their test results.

At this level within a corporation, talent decisions are critical to the future of a company. DDI has developed a strategy that provides a profile of an individual from an outside, unbiased source. In the competitive world we work in, having the right talent at the top can mean the difference between success and failure.
