Wherever you live, you know that jobs have become a focal point of the economy. Politicians promise they are "creating or saving" jobs and don't hesitate to jump in front of a camera when there is even a glimmer of good job news. Having a job during these difficult times, when you know friends and colleagues that have lost theirs, is a plus.
Last year was a good year for Brian Weyandt. The 57-year old IT manager from Atlanta saw two of his children get married and he started a new position at AT&T. Unfortunately, not long after getting his new job, he was unexpectedly laid off - again. He immediately started his job search and joined a career support group. The support group is sponsored by a Methodist church located near his home. Weyandt says it was comforting to find a network of people like himself. The group has helped keep him motivated. The motivation paid off as he has recently found a new job as a business analyst at a Georgia provider of fiber-optic services. Churches have become more involved in helping people deal with the recession and unemployment by offering career workshops, resume help and networking functions. While all three are important, networking has been very beneficial to many people as it can help generate job leads as well as contacts. Religious-based networking seems to work. Church members tend to be very involved in helping fellow parishioners as well as the community at large. If you are out of work and interested in developing more contacts, it may be wise to talk to your local Georgia church and find out if they are involved. If they offer career-oriented help, be sure you know what you want to take away from this type of assistance. Put together a short pitch that will quickly communicate to other people the industry and companies you are targeting. This will help others assist with leads and referrals.
