JobsOhio Trying to Recover From Massive Job Losses
Ohio is trying to recover from the recession and, to some degree, has fared better than other states. Unemployment in Ohio is currently 8.6 percent, down over 1.5 percent from a year ago. That's about all the good news on the Ohio employment front. Overall, Ohio has lost over 400,000 jobs since 2006 with little hope of replacing them any time soon.
Newly elected Governor John Kasich was elected based in part on his promise to "move the needle" on jobs and do it quickly. Kasich said the needle on job growth would move by "working at the speed of business rather than the speed of statute". Unfortunately, Governor Kasich is getting a big dose of what former Governor Strickland faced that ultimately cost him the election. As recently as May, Ohio suffered even more large-scale layoffs, up nearly one-third for the month. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 63 Ohio employers laid off at least 50 workers during May. First time jobless insurance claims were up 32 percent at 5,170, the fifth highest number in the country. During March, April and May, Ohio had 172 layoffs of over 50 people each for a total of 8,600 lost jobs. Even with those dismal numbers fresh on his mind, Kasich took the opportunity to tout the various successes of his first few months in office. He claimed that every Ohioan should be happy with the progress his administration had made on jobs and the economy. Currently there are over 508,000 unemployed workers in Ohio. This is actually a decrease of 95,000 from a year earlier. Have the 95,000 found work thereby reducing the overall number unemployed? Not likely. While some have found jobs, there is a good possibility that they may be underemployed, taking a job below their skill and experience level. If Governor Kasich has "gotten the bureaucrats off people's backs", it probably doesn't seem that way to the half million Ohioans who don't have jobs.
