North Dakota: Many Jobs, No Housing

The economic forces of the last few years have forced workers from hard hit states to states that have jobs. North Dakota definitely has jobs in the booming oil industry. But with good employment news, a new problem has arisen. There is little if any available housing for the new workers coming to the state.

Joey Scott, 25, recently moved from Montana and almost immediately had a job in the oil fields. "I've got a job and plenty of money, but I can't find anywhere to live," said Mr. Scott. Motel rooms in Williston are booked solid, some months in advance. Every mobile home park and apartment complex has a long waiting list.

For now, Mr. Scott is sleeping in his truck in the Wal-Mart parking lot. In fact, many new workers are sleeping in their cars or living in tents and campers. Some are renting space in basements and other workers are sleeping in company offices and warehouses.

The bad economy and unemployment caused workers from all over the country to go where the jobs are. Oil industry jobs are abundant in North Dakota. Currently there are over 100 drilling rigs operating. Estimates say the number of could reach 150 this year.

New arrivals need to be aware of the limited housing conditions, North Dakota's harsh winters and blistering hot summers before they decide to move. Bringing a family is simply not an option, but many workers have no choice.

The mayor of Williston, Ward Koeser, met with the governor of North Dakota recently asking for help with the housing crisis. Williston's population at last count was around 12,000. Today it is probably closer to 15,000. If you did not secure a place to stay months ago, finding suitable housing is basically impossible.

More than 180 oil companies are involved in the North Dakota operations. Some are bringing in large, portable housing units so that workers can live on-site. The man sleeping in his truck, Mr. Scott, is now living in on-site temporary housing.
