JobsCareer Workers Taking Menial Jobs
Holiday jobs, like costume shop sellers for Halloween, are normally reserved for high school kids who are in need of extra cash while they are still studying. This year, however, a lot of these jobs are being snatched by older employees, some even with masters degrees, who are desperate to generate extra income even if it means swallowing up their pride.
A lot of these "career workers" have been out of work for years already, depending on their unemployment checks and/or their 401(k) accounts while desperately scavenging for jobs. Impending holiday seasons are a good time for them because there are more menial jobs that they can fulfill at the expense of those high school students who just want to make some quick money. Part-time jobs are also filled by the same career workers in a situation directly reflecting the sorry state of the economy. Should older workers feel guilty about taking jobs away from the youngsters? Maybe not. After all, these youngsters are still under the care of their parents, while the career workers taking over these part-time or seasonal jobs are on their own or even have a family to look after. You have to do what you have to do, and if it means competing with youngsters for these jobs, you should do it. In this kind of economic climate, conditions are too harsh to worry about the people who fail to get jobs because of you. Normally, it's the career workers who get the jobs because they are seen to be more responsible and more dedicated than their high school counterparts. More than the idea of youngsters failing to get jobs, a career worker's greatest problem will be his/her pride. Temporary, seasonal, and part-time jobs like these tend to be a big step down from career workers' normal pay, but if you don't have any other option, it's all just a matter of adjusting your expectations. At least all of the problem is in the mind and not in the wallet. You can talk about...
