JobsVirginia Governor and Jobs Commission Work to Attract Jobs
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has been in office a relatively short time. His time, however short, has been spent doing exactly what he centered his campaign around--creating jobs for Virginians. So far, it appears his efforts are reaping significant results.
Since February, the state has added 71,500 jobs. Representing all forms of employment, (full-time, part-time and temporary) the new jobs are in both the private and public sectors. This increase ranks Virginia number three in the nation in both the number of new jobs and percentage increase in employment. Keeping with the number three trend, Virginia's unemployment rate of 7.1 percent is the third lowest east of the Mississippi and the 13th lowest rate nationally. Since February, McDonnell's administration has closed 110 economic deals that will ultimately create 7,200 new jobs and over $1 billion in investment in the state. And on the 101st day of the McDonnell Administration Virginia was awarded the corporate headquarters of Northrop Grumman, a Fortune 100 company. Recently Volkswagen Group moved their corporate headquarters from Michigan to Virginia creating over 500 local jobs. While jobs in the state are growing, McDonnell says he will not be satisfied with unemployment figures of 7 percent. The last time Virginia unemployment was this high was in 1982-83. "As long as we have this number of people unemployed, it's unacceptable," McDonnell said. McDonnell added that Virginia has consistently ranked among the two most business-friendly states in the nation. He believes, however, the state has lost ground in attracting its share of new jobs. Virginia is now behind Florida, Georgia and several other states in recruitment of new business. Noting that competitive challenges are getting more difficult, McDonnell said, "Foreign currencies are getting stronger and training and education of people in the Pacific Rim countries is very good. We are falling behind in the number of scientists and engineers graduating from universities in the U.S." Holding true to his campaign promises, McDonnell is working for economic growth and development for his state.
