The depressed economy is causing concern for many teens and college students. Now that summer has returned, schools are out and young people are looking for ways to earn money during their break. But they are finding summer and part-time positions are already taken.
This had led to a 27 percent unemployment rate among New York teens, an increase of 92 percent in the past five years. With the national unemployment rate hovering slightly below 10 percent, employers have slashed many jobs, particularly lower wage jobs. Now youths are competing with recent college graduates and underemployed adults for any available positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics teen unemployment this summer in New York will be about the same as 2009. But there's even more bad news for teens looking for summer jobs. Approximately 2.4 million students graduated from college this year and are having trouble finding work in their fields of study. For every open job there are about five people competing for the opening according to BLS figures. Less than half of all employers surveyed plan on hiring recent college graduates for full-time positions. As the math indicates, candidates for part-time or low paying jobs continues to increase. So what can teens do to find a summer job? Shawn Boyer, CEO of snagajob.com, says teens need to have a positive attitude, flexibility in their schedule and, if they have any, tout their previous experience. Be proactive and don't wait for the employer to contact you after you have submitted an application. Also, dress and appearance is important. A woman in Wappingers Falls says her clean-cut son found a job while her other son, an 18-year-old with long hair and an eyebrow piercing, hasn't found anything. It may be that he is not as aggressive as his clean-cut brother but, as the saying goes, "you only have one chance to make a first impression." Be tenacious, social and outgoing. And remember, there a lot of 40-year-old guys with college degrees delivering pizza.
