Not a great deal more, but given the current economic mess we're in, every little bit helps. If you qualify for maximum unemployment benefits, don't run out and spend the money just yet. Because of the recession, the average annual state wage in 2010 actually increased by 2.1 percent to $48,162. Before you get excited and plan to move to Washington, the increase was actually the result of more lower wage workers being laid off rather than wages increasing through raises. When lower paid positions are eliminated, the average wage increases. The average wage also increases if employers increase work hours for part-time workers rather than hire new employees. So, if you are currently unemployed and live in Washington the minimum weekly rate will increase by $3 to $138. If you are at the maximum weekly benefit amount, your benefit will increase $13 to $583. Currently only about 20 percent of all unemployment insurance claims are paid at the highest amount. The increase in unemployment benefits across the board probably will not qualify any unemployed person to open a commodities trading account. On the other hand, the extra money, whether $3 or $13, will certainly come in handy. In Washington, the term average annual wage, is used to calculate unemployment benefits as well as the amount employers will pay in unemployment taxes. Beginning next year employers will pay unemployment taxes on the first $38,200 paid to an employee, up $900 from current levels.
