Texas has clearly weathered the economic meltdown better than most states. Because of sound decisions, housing prices throughout the state maintained their values. Companies in states hit hard by the recession are moving to the state to take advantage of Texas' business-friendly atmosphere. There are jobs available at all levels.
Texas is home to a number of military installations and is now focused on veterans entering the workforce. Recently the state launched a $3 million workforce development initiative designed to take advantage of the knowledge, skills and abilities of veterans for both college credit and employment opportunities. Texas' population is growing and the state wants to take advantage of the high quality training the military offers, particularly in the allied health care occupations. Employment as physical therapists, x-ray technicians and pharmacy technicians are occupations of high demand. As more veterans return to civilian life in areas such as San Antonio, Houston and Temple-Killeen, veterans will have access to funds to help them get maximum credit for their military experience. This funding will allow vets to use their military training and skills toward a degree or certification in their chosen field. The allied health occupations let veterans transfer their military experience directly to the workplace. Funds are also available for military families who will require help searching for jobs or for job training. Texas sees itself as the model for a nation welcoming returning veterans by putting their military experience to work. Returning veterans are in a difficult position and Texas wants to put them to work as soon as possible to make it a better state. The Texas Workforce Commission is working with community colleges to develop a model that will help transfer military experience into a degree and employment.
